3 Types of Automatic Gates (And How to Choose the Right One)

Automatic gates are one of the most effective ways to improve security, convenience, and curb appeal. At Midsouth Access, we build and install three primary types: single swing, double swing, and sliding gates.

Single Swing Gates


A single swing gate uses one panel that opens inward like a door. This is the simplest automatic gate option. With fewer moving parts and mechanisms, it’s a reliable cost-effective solution. Single swing gates work best for standard-width driveways with enough space for the gate to open fully.


Best for:

  • Narrow to standard driveways

  • Residential properties

Double Swing Gates


As the most popular residential option, double swing gates use two panels that meet in the middle and open outward or inward. It creates a balanced, high-end look while allowing wider openings without putting too much strain on a single gate panel. Like single swing gates, they require a significant amount of clearance space to open.


Best for:

  • Wide driveways

  • Residential properties

Sliding Gates


Sliding gates move horizontally along a track or cantilever system instead of swinging open. They’re ideal when space is limited or a swing gate isn’t practical, such as on sloped driveways or properties close to the road. Although they're sometimes found on residential properties, sliding gates most commonly installed for commercial and high-security applications.

  • Tight or restricted spaces

  • Sloped or uneven driveways

  • Residential and commercial properties
